Asthma is the term used to describe inflammation and narrowing of the airways (throat, trachea and bronchioles) that lead to your lungs. Irritants cause these passageways to become swollen and constricted, making breathing difficult.
Allergens, including dust mites, animal dander, pollen and molds can trigger asthma. Chemical irritants, also called volatile organic compounds (VOCs), from building materials, cigarette smoke, dry cleaning household cleansers and self care products can also trigger asthma.
If your asthma is caused by airborne particles select an air purifier that has a medical grade HEPA filter. For asthma triggered by chemical irritants, use an air purifier with an activated carbon filter.
Children who are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are often impulsive, have difficulty concentrating and struggle with hyperactivity. While the causes of ADD are not well understood, we do know that Attention Deficit Disorder is often episodic in nature.
Dr. Doris Rapp, author of, “Is This Your Child’s World?” reports that there is strong evidence that ADD, ADHD and other learning disabilities are often related to exposure to chemicals in the environment – Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) and allergens.
You can discover if your child’s behavioral or learning problems stem from environmental illness. Start by carefully observing your child in a variety of environments. Monitor your child’s ability to focus, their level of impulsiveness and the quality of their penmanship. Do they perform equally well at home, school and in stores, or do certain environments make the ADD or ADHD worse?
Once you successfully identify which environment are problematic, try to learn which chemicals or allergens are creating the adverse reactions. Finally, you can either get rid of the irritant, or limit you child’s exposure to it. A premium HEPA filter with a powerful activated carbon filter is an important step in the management of ADD, ADHD and other environmental illnesses.
Some headaches are directly related to airborne allergens, including pollen, dust mites, molds and pet dander. Other headaches are triggered by chemical irritants (MCS), including paint solvents, cleaning products, cosmetics and tobacco smoke.
To select the appropriate air purifier, it is important to determine what triggers your headaches. Keep a careful record, noting the environment in which your headache occurs and the onset of the headache. It is also important to note the environments in which you are headache free.
If your headaches are caused by airborne particles, select an air purifier that has a medical grade HEPA filter. For headaches triggered by chemical irritants, use an air purifier with an activated carbon filter. Chemisorbers, including potassium iodide and ammoniasorb extend the activated carbon’s capabilities to remove more toxics from the air.
Molds are microscopic organisms that thrive in warm, moist places. Hurricanes and floods provide the ideal environment for molds to grow. Molds reproduce by making mold spores. In addition, some molds produce mycotoxins, a poisonous non-living waste product. Molds spores and mycotoxins can make you sick.
Molds spores cause respiratory problems including allergies and asthma. Additionally, mold spores and mycotoxins can cause skin problems, nausea, headaches, poor concentration, attention deficit disorder (ADD), insomnia, depression and more.
What can you do if you are sensitive to molds, mold spores or mycotoxins? First, limit indoor moisture – humidity should be lower than 50%. Low humidity inhibits the formation of mold spores. Also, a premium quality HEPA air cleaner captures microscopic airborne particles including mold spores and mycotoxins. Choose an air cleaner with a generously sized medical grade HEPA filter to help limit respiratory allergies and asthma.
Multiple chemical sensitivities are a form of environmental illness. Individuals with MCS have severe reactions to chemical pollutants in the air. Chemically sensitive individuals may react with asthma, headaches, vertigo, joint pain, burning eyes, runny nose, extreme lethargy, poor concentration, ADD and diminished memory.
For some, a small exposure to diesel, gasoline, solvents, adhesives, cleaning products, perfume, hair and nail products, tobacco smoke, mycotoxins (mold’s byproduct) and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can compromise health. Repeat or prolonged exposure to a toxicant or poisonous agent can make a chemically-sensitive person more prone to react to other pollutants.
For multiple chemical sensitivities, use an air purifier with an activated carbon filter with a chemisorber. Chemisorbers, including potassium iodide and ammoniasorb extend the activated carbon’s capabilities to remove more toxics from the air.
One third of all people with airborne allergies are allergic to pets. Pets have many endearing qualities, but their dander (dry skin), saliva and urine can trigger respiratory allergies and asthma. These allergens (particles) collect in animal fur, on all surfaces in the home, such as rugs and curtains and in the air. We breathe in the allergens, which travel through our airways and into our lungs. Severe coughing, shortness of breath and asthma may result when those who are highly sensitive and allergy prone are exposed to dogs, cats or birds.
To help manage pet allergies select an air purifier that has a generously-sized medical grade HEPA filter for the removal of pet allergens (particulates) from the air.
To help manage pet odors, select an air purifier with a generous amount of activated carbon and Ammoniasorb in the filter.
Hay fever or seasonal allergies are your your body’s response to the pollen released from flowering trees, grasses and plants. Dust mites and mold are microscopic organisms that thrive in homes with humidity higher than 50 percent.
If you are allergic, tiny particles of pollen and the byproducts of dust mites or mold are likely to create problems. The immune systems of allergic people are highly sensitive, responding to allergens with an excess of histamines, which cause irritation to the eyes, nose and airways. Asthma may be triggered by an allergic reaction to pollen, dust mites and mold.
To help manage pollen, dust mite and mold spore allergies select a air purifier has a generously sized medical grade HEPA filter that helps to remove the allergic irritants (particles) from the air and in so doing, limits airborne allergies. Adequate HEPA filtration along with low humidity is the key to managing allergies to pollen, dust mites and mold spores.
If you find yourself tossing and turning or waking up with stuffy sinuses and itchy eyes and skin, an air purifier might be just the thing you need to achieve the invigorating 7-9 hours of restful sleep that experts agree most adults need.
Sleep quality can be significantly impacted by sneezing, runny nose and nasal congestion, common symptoms related to allergic rhinitis (AR). Allergies can be seasonal and may be triggered by tree pollen, grass, ragweed, or outdoor mold. Year round allergies are triggered by pet dander, indoor mold and dust mites which are found in bedding, mattresses and carpeting.
Additionally, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder in which breathing is temporarily and repeatedly interrupted during sleep. The National Sleep Foundation reports that obstructive sleep apnea is linked to allergic rhinitis.
You can limit allergic rhinitis with a premium HEPA air cleaner. To help solve sleep problems, Austin Air teamed up with John Hopkins University Medical school to create the Bedroom Machine.
